About Peter John
Peter John started trading back in July 1975 under the name of Bicester Décor. Selling mainly wallpaper, paint and sundries from their Market Square premises in Bicester, Oxfordshire, we quickly developed a reputation for stocking the largest selection of paint and wallcoverings in Oxfordshire.
Two years later we expanded the business by opening a branch in Berkhamsted. The name Peter John was then born. Obviously the Bicester Décor name would not suit in Berkhamsted, so the Christian names of brothers Peter & John Shipperley were used to form the name.
The trading format continued for some years unchanged until it became clear that there was an increasing movement towards co-ordination of wallcoverings and fabrics. Co-ordinated collections from Sanderson, Coloroll and Vymura were released. The Dolly Mixtures collection of small prints, and the more traditional floral designs from Sanderson Triad range, started the trend towards co-ordinating wallpaper with curtains, bedding and upholstery.
Peter & John realised the importance of this development and became one of the few retailers in Britain to stock the full design range of these two collections in both fabric and wallpaper. The foundations for the future of Peter John had been laid.
Curtains and curtain fabrics became more and more important in the trading strategy of Peter John. Top quality hand made curtains were now being made to co-ordinate with the rest of a room's decoration.
A branch in Leighton Buzzard was opened in 1981 and the Aylesbury branch, located in the old Friars Square followed in 1986.
The Leighton Buzzard shop was closed and later the Friars Square shop in Aylesbury had to close due to the refurbishment of the centre. To replace these two units a larger flagship store was opened in 1988 on the outskirts of Aylesbury in Gatehouse Way.
Today Peter John offers a comprehensive range of curtains, soft furnishing products and services a wide choice of the finest fabrics from the World's most respected names from our branches in Berkhamsted and Aylesbury.
